A homemade solid toothpaste? What a wild idea! And yet, why not? After our solid shaving soap, shampoo bars, and dish soap, it seemed perfectly logical and interesting to keep building on this solid track record! Allow us to present Tube Be Gone, our solid toothpaste recipe that’s sure to make you smile.

It took many rounds of experiments to perfect this DIY toothpaste. It had to foam up nicely, clean teeth gently, and not leave an unpleasant taste in our mouths. This massive challenge wore out the whole team’s toothbrushes before we achieved a result that satisfied us all!

We never would have thought we’d be so proud of a toothpaste recipe. But that’s the Tube Be Gone effect!

How to make solid toothpaste

Before you begin

  • When ground, SCI (sodium cocoyl isesthionate) is very powdery. It must therefore be handled with caution in a well-ventilated place or while wearing a dust mask.
  • Careful! It is very important to note that xylitol is very toxic to our animal friends. Do not use this DIY toothpaste on pets!

Good to know!

  • SCI is the cleaning agent in this toothpaste recipe. It is a gentle cleanser and adds the desired foaminess.
  • Calcium carbonate is a mild abrasive.
  • Xylitol adds sweetness to the toothpaste without encouraging cavity formation.
  • Peppermint essential oil was chosen for its antiseptic, antibacterial, and refreshing properties, which leave breath smelling fresh. Caution: this recipe already calls for the maximum recommended amount. Do not increase the percentage of peppermint essential oil!
  • Coconut oil is known for its cleansing and antibacterial properties. It also helps make this product compact.
  • You can make your solid toothpaste in a small container, if you wish. Just put the toothpaste in the container at step 9, compact it well, and wait until it has fully dried before closing the container.

Steps to follow

  1. Prepare and disinfect your equipment and workspace.
  2. Carefully grind the SCI with a coffee grinder, other grinder, or mortar and pestle. Pour into a small bowl.
  3. Add the demineralized water, xylitol, and menthol crystals (if using) to the SCI. Melt on the double boiler.DIY toothpaste
  4. In a second small bowl, weigh the calcium carbonate and stearic acid. Set aside.
  5. Weigh the coconut oil in a ramekin.
  6. When the SCI mixture has melted, add the coconut oil. Melt. Once melted, remove from heat.DIY toothpaste
  7. Add the calcium carbonate and stearic acid. Mix well until homogeneous.making toothpaste
  8. Weigh the essential oils then add them to the mixture. Mix again.
  9. Pour into the mold and firmly pack down. Leave for a few hours to harden. Unmold and allow to air dry.solid toothpaste

Use and conservation

Homemade solid toothpaste is easy to use! Just wet your toothbrush, rub it against the toothpaste to pick some up, then brush as you normally would.

It is important to allow the product to dry between each use.

Once your homemade toothpaste is dry, we recommend storing it in a sealed metal container.

When made in optimal sanitary conditions, it will keep for at least six months.

    I am eager to make this zero waste solid toothpaste but when I started calculating my formula I realized your formula adds up to 110%. Not sure about proportions to proceed.

    I was wondering, why do you add stearic acid in your toothpaste? I don’t think I have seen it in any other toothpaste recipes.

      Hello Camille,
      The stearic acid is used to make the toothpaste harder, or it will break into small pieces. That’s why you don’t see it in regular toothpaste recipes.

    Can I use Sorbitol instead of water?
    Just wondering, because I’ve seen It in other toothpaste fórmulas and I haver It here sitting around without use in my shelf

      Sorbitol will sweeten the product, so it will replace xylitol. However, we cannot advise you on the proportions!

    Isnt it required to use a preservative as we are adding water?

    Also is there a possibility of these tabs melting in high temperatures because of coconut oil?

      The self life of this product is around 3 months.
      In large-scale industrial manufacturing, products are made in very strict sanitary conditions. They come into contact with the surrounding air as little as possible, and the product is sealed to extend its shelf life prior to opening. This is why some products keep for 6 to 12 months.
      The coconut oil won’t make this product melt.

    Hello! Does the formula produce foam? I made this recipe a few times, I liked the result, but it does not produce foam on brushing. Would you have anything to add that would increase the foam?

      This recipe does produce foam, but not as much as a product you can buy, for example. You can try to add some SCI, but not more than 10 g or it will taste terrible!

      We cannot give you a precise time because it will depend on the heat of the room, the humidity … But your toothpaste should be usable after 24 hours.
