Conditioner is a very important part of your hair care routine. It detangles, softens, and nourishes your hair—particularly the ends and mid-lengths, which are so often damaged by daily activities. That’s why it’s essential to strengthen and care for them with conditioner! To help make this step a snap, here’s a recipe for a homemade conditioner that we adore: Coco Kokum!

The name should give you a hint or two about its ingredients! As you’ve probably already guessed, this DIY conditioner contains coconut oil and kokum butter. Both will nourish and sheathe hair fibres and leave your hair shiny—exactly what we want in a conditioner!

Good to know!

  • We chose to use castor oil in this conditioner recipe for its wonderful hair-strengthening properties. It’s great for all hair types.
  • Coconut oil and kokum butter provide nourishment and sheathe the hair fibre.
  • Cetyl alcohol is the conditioning agent; it will help detangle your hair.
  • Patchouli essential oil is good for all hair types and will revitalize your hair.
  • To tailor this recipe to your hair type, you can replace the kokum butter with another butter and the castor and coconut oils with other oils of the same type (i.e. the coconut oil must be replaced by another oil that’s solid at room temperature). However, it’s important to keep the same quantities so as not to affect the texture of the final product.
  • To make your conditioner even more hydrating and detangling, you can add marshmallow powder to it! All you have to do is replace 1–3 g (1%–3%) of demineralized water with the same quantity of marshmallow powder and incorporate it into the aqueous phase at step 2. It will also soften your hair! Keep in mind that adding marshmallow powder will make your homemade conditioner much thicker, so it is better to put it in a pot rather than a bottle.

Steps to follow

  1. Prepare and disinfect your equipment and workspace.
  2. Weigh the demineralized water in a small bowl and heat it on the double boiler until it reaches 70°C.
  3. Weigh the ECOmulse, kokum butter, coconut oil, castor oil, and cetyl alcohol. Heat them together on the double boiler until the mixture reaches 70°C.DIy conditioner
  4. While the two phases are heating, weigh the elderberry extract, rosemary oleoresin, aromatic essence, and essential oil. Set aside.
  5. When the two phases have reached 70°C–80°C, remove both from heat. Pour the oil phase over the aqueous phase, then begin to emulsify using the mini-mixer.
  6. When the emulsion begins to whiten, place the bowl in the cold water bath to help the mixture emulsify and cool to 45°C. Continue to mix with the mini-mixer throughout.conditioner recipe 
  7. When the emulsion has cooled to 45°C, remove the bowl from the cold water bath and add the contents of the ramekin (the preservatives and scents). Mix well with the mini-mixer.
  8. Transfer into the tottle bottle using a funnel.  way for making conditioner

Use and conservation

This homemade conditioner is formulated for all hair types and is particularly good for dry hair. 

Use it after shampooing. Apply it to your hair and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing.

If you have dry hair, this DIY conditioner can also be used as a no-rinse treatment. Apply a dollop of conditioner to the ends and mid-lengths of damp hair and leave it to dry. This technique works particularly well for curly hair, as it helps to form ringlets. 

When made in optimal sanitary conditions, your homemade conditioner will keep for about three months.

      That can be possible but that would change the entire recipe, so you would have to make your own tests to find the new proportion of each ingredient. Please note that the texture will also be different.
